Amazing Double Chocolate Protein Brownies

Okay so nearly everyone loves chocolate, and the only thing better than chocolate is more chocolate! That's where these brownies come in.

Every once in a while you have to feed your sweet tooth. Maybe not everyday, but you get the idea. If you want satisfy a dessert craving but not be worried about its effect on your body, these protein brownies are perfect. They are super chocolaty and sweet, but packed full of healthy baking ingredients. The crazy thing though is that the swap from regular baking ingredients to healthier choices actually improves the brownies taste and texture wise! The brownies are gooier, denser, and richer in flavor. I'm not kidding, you get to have your brownies and eat them too!

There are a few reasons these brownies are amazing:

First, the swap from wheat to almond flour improves the taste and texture of the brownies. The brownies have a richer, deep flavor, and the extra fat amplifies the flavor of the cacao. Texture wise, the slightly grainier flour of the almonds works well in the brownies as it helps give them a chewier, thicker bite.

Second, the swap from wheat flour to almond flour immediately improves the nutrition and macronutrient profile of the brownies. Satiating healthy fats are increased and protein bumps up a bit, while the carbohydrate load drops. Fiber increases significantly, and nutrient density increases with high levels of Vitamin B7 (biotin), Vitamin E, Copper, and Manganese.

The result is no noticeable "protein" flavor or springy texture, but the amount of protein bumps up from 2% (example conventional brownie recipe) to 9% percent. When baked with, whey protein powders absorb a lot of moisture, creating a very undesirable springy texture. This does not happen to plant protein powders.

Before the recipe, it's important to cover one last important consideration. One of the best qualities about these brownies isn't how they taste, or how easy to bake they are, but rather how they make you feel after eating them. Normally after eating 1-2 squares of brownies, most people are fine for about an hour and then have a major sugar crash. Add some ice cream into the equation and it's even worse. The swap to almond flour and addition of protein powder evens out the fat and carb macronutrients percentages, the fat helping to keep your blood sugar levels stable. You can feel good and enjoy the brownies in the moment even more now because you'll no longer have that voice in the back of your head reminding you of your impending sugar crash!

Double Chocolate Protein Brownies

Prep: 15 mins

Bake: 30-33 mins

Total: 45-48 mins

Yield: 16 brownies 



  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9" round pan or 8" square pan with coconut oil.
  • In a 6 quart bowl, whisk together the melted coconut oil, coconut sugar, white sugar, salt, vanilla, and eggs. Sift the cacao powder in order to remove any clumps, and then mix it in. Be careful not to over mix!
  • In a separate bowl, mix the protein powder, almond flour, and baking powder.
  • Stir the flour mixture into the existing chocolate mixture with a spatula.
  • Pour the brownie batter in the well greased pan. Spread it to the edges with the spatula.
  • Bake the brownies for 30-33 minutes until the top is set. A toothpick inserted into the center comes out nearly clean but with a few moist chocolate crumbs.
  • Remove the brownies from oven and cool them on a tray for about an hour. For storage, cover with foil or plastic wrap and store at room temperature. Freeze for long term storage!

*Note - I would caution against using almond meal for these brownies, as the larger, more unrefined grains are harder to bake with, and the flavor isn't as rich. Blanched almond flour works great.
