Being optimally healthy in this modern world can be very difficult. To a lot of people that sounds like an excuse, but it's true! You could be doing everything "right" but still feel lethargic, have autoimmune issues, feel unhealthy, have gut issues, or more. The solution sometimes isn't obvious. Let's consider the following scenario:
You're shopping for a new greens supplement that you'll take every morning for general health reasons. After some research, you've narrowed your search down to the Organifi Green Juice and SuperGreens3000 (a fictional product). Both feature 11 ingredients, all of them organic, but the Green Juice is $69.95 a tub and the SuperGreens3000 is $39.95 a tub. Total weight of product and the number of servings is the same for both tubs. Which product do you choose?
Well if you were to base your purchasing decision just off of the price and ingredients label, purchasing the SuperGreens3000 is a no brainer. It's $30 dollars cheaper and features the same organic ingredients!
The answer might not so simple though. Consider the next following scenario:
Two companies use organic wheatgrass as an ingredient in their greens supplement. One company is devoted to creating the healthiest possible greens supplement on the market, and makes sure to source their organic wheatgrass from a farmer who uses pure, unspoiled farmland that's been that way for generations. The second company cares about healthy products, but is more concerned with making a profit than providing the absolute best greens supplement possible. They source their organic wheatgrass from a farmer who recently converted his farmland over to organic farming practices, but beforehand was a heavy wheat, corn, and soybean producer. As a result, that farmland just a couple years prior was exposed to heavy amounts of pesticides, insecticides, and herbicides for decades. Heavy metal concentrations in the soil are highly elevated, and even though his new crops are "organic" they are sold for less due to their tested high values of heavy metals such as lead and herbicides such as glyphosate.
We see in the above scenario how one ingredient, organic wheatgrass, grown by two different farmers can be dramatically different. And there are multiple similar scenarios (such as water pollution, lax governmental testing standards, etc) which can dramatically change how healthy an ingredient is even though on a nutrition facts label it is labeled the same. I call this the Same Ingredient Same Price Fallacy, because at first instinct you'd expect a supplement or product with the same ingredients to have the same price. That belief doesn't take into account all of the different factors which can influence the nutrition of an ingredient, and those factors can have a big impact.
The moral of the story is to make sure you thoroughly research the products you use, especially the products you use often. It's impossible to verify, but one hour of research done now to find the best greens supplement you'll use for the next twenty years might save you hundreds of hours or more of chronic illness after daily low dose toxin exposure from a cheap greens supplement finally build up a physiological effect.
